| Extraction of Omega-3 Fatty Acids from Fish Oils |
| |
UIC's Short-Path-Distillation as Core Technology for a new Solution Offering of BDI Biodiesel International AG |
| |
In cooperation with our holding company BDI BioDiesel International AG a plant concept for the extraction of valuable omega-3 fatty acids from fish oils has been developped. It combines UIC's short-path-distillation technology with BDI's profound knowledge in designing and realizing plants particularly in the area of complex oils and fats.
There has been a rapid development of the omega-3 fatty acids market in recent years. The upward trend seems unbroken. Due to their positive impact on health these fatty acids play a major role in pharmacy and food industry.
The relevant steps of the process are:
- Trans-esterification of the fish oils to obtain ethyl esters
- short path distillation of the ethyl esters to increase the concentration of EPA/DHA
- encymatic re-esterification to obtain omega-3 fatty acids
- additional processing steps, such as deodorisation, bleaching and winterisation
The yield of valuable fatty acids amounts to about 30% of the raw material. With specific BDI process technology valuable product streams may be extracted from the remaining 70% to a higher degree compared to conventional technologies.

| Production of Natural Vitamin E (Tocopherol) |
| |
Supply of a multi-stage distillation plant |
| |
In 2005, a Chinese bioengineering company placed an order with UIC GmbH and its agency in the P. R. of China – SepTech Co., Ltd. – comprising the engineering, delivery, assembly, and start-up of a distillation plant for the concentration of Vitamin E (Tocopherol) from a side product resulting from the soy bean oil refining.
In 2006, the complete distillation plant was supplied, assembled and successfully commissioned. The plant mainly consists of a Thin Film Evaporator and several downstream Short Path Distillators. The operation pressures of the distillation stages are between approx. 2 mbar and approx. 0.02 mbar. These operation pressures are generated by a multi-stage vacuum system, consisting of a liquid ring pump and several steam ejector pumps and roots blowers. When engineering the plant, besides the attainment of the required final pressures, a main emphasis was the reliability of the plant at continuous operation and a minimum amount of maintenance.
While UIC GmbH planned and delivered the main components of this distillation plant, UIC’s agency in China – SepTech Co., Ltd. – supplied the secondary components, as for example heating and cooling units, and took over the planning and delivery of the steel frame as well as the supervision of the assembly. The commissioning and start-up of the plant, the 48-hours-acceptance-run and the training of the customer´s staff were done by the engineers both of UIC GmbH and of SepTech Co., Ltd.
The successful 48-hours-acceptance-run proved that the plant was reaching all specified process parameters.

| Vacuum Pump Sets Specifically Designed for the Chemical Industry |
| |
from the vacuum specialists |
| |
In the chemical industry as well as in many similar industries, certain processes are being performed at reduced pressure – i.e. under vacuum – as for example evaporating, drying, removing of solvents, etc.
To continuously generate the reduced pressure, vacuum pump sets are applied. These pump sets consist of one or – as in most cases – several vacuum pumps as well as the possibly required condensers, heat exchangers, measuring devices, valves, and the piping of all components. Usually these components are assembled in a separate steel rack.
The engineers of UIC GmbH have a very comprehensive know-how in the area of vacuum technology: Firstly UIC GmbH was formerly part of the Leybold (Leybold-Heraeus) company, one of the world market leaders in vacuum technology, and secondly UIC GmbH is dealing with the design of vacuum distillation plants since 1989 already. In these distillation plants, mixtures of substances are partially evaporated and condensed in the rough and fine vacuum range (i.e. between 1000 mbar and 0.001 mbar). Although the vacuum pump sets which are located downstream of the distillators are protected from carry-over of uncondensed vapours into the vacuum system – e. g. by means of cold traps –, such carry-over can never be entirely avoided.
Such vapours (often of organic nature) being carried over to the vacuum system, might lead to severe problems because of crystallization, polymerisation, fouling, condensation within the operation media of the vacuum pumps (pump oil or liquid ring fluid), thermal decomposition on hot surfaces inside the pump body, etc.
By selection of suitable vacuum pumps and their appropriate alignment within the vacuum pump set, a reliable and low-maintenance vacuum system has to be designed for each individual plant.
Besides the problems of the “carry-over”, also the process relevant parameters as suction speed and operation pressure have to be considered, considering the available utilities like steam, cooling water or brine, possibly the available capacities of a waste water treatment and the total operation costs resulting thereof.
In case there is a risk of presence of flammable gas mixtures either in the direct surrounding of a pump set or inside a pump set, the explosion proof regulations 94/9/EG – also called ATEX – have to be followed strictly. These rules are not only to be applied for electrical components, but also all mechanical components of the pump set have to be arranged in a way that the ignition of a flammable gas mixture is prevented.
It will be a pleasure for us to offer you or know-how in the design of vacuum pump sets - having been acquired during many decades with the design, supply and maintenance of several hundreds of vacuum distillation plants – not only for the application in vacuum distillation plants, but also for all other challenging vacuum projects of chemical and similar industries.

| 2-stage Laboratory Plants of Series KDL 5 |
| |
Mudular Plant Design |
| |
The modular design of our series KDL 5 allows the assembly of reliably operating distillation plant consisting of standardized components for the application in laboratories. Thus a great variety of different plant versions is available to perform nearly any distillation task.
Even multi-stage plants can easily be realized by means of the KDL 5 components. E.g. the combination of Thin Film Evaporator and Short Path Distillator is frequently used if large amounts of light volatiles (e. g. solvents) have to be separated in a first step at operation pressures above 1 mbar and in a second step, i.e. in the Short Path Distillator, the valuable product is being separated from a residue at operation pressures which are considerably below 1 mbar.
On the left side you see a picture of a 2-stage combination of 2 Short Path Distillators. By this configuration, among others, the gentle separation of components is possible which are contained in multi-substance-mixtures and which have a medium volatility.
If you are interested in further details about our modular laboratory and pilot plants, please send an e-mail to the Product Manager in charge, Mr. Axel Fliedner (af@uic-gmbh.de).

| Heating of Thin Film Evaporators and Short Path Distillators |
| |
Thermal Panel for Heating with Steam |
| |
The heating of Thin Film Evaporators and Short Path Distillators is usually done by means of thermal oil. Steam is an interesting alternative if available with a pressure which is sufficient for the required temperature.
Steam heating has some advantages, e.g.:
- lower capital expenditure (no heating unit for thermal oil)
- optimal temperature constancy all over the evaporator surface area.
There are several alternatives for the mechanical design of the heating zones of steam-heated apparatuses, e.g.: jackets, welded half-pipes, shouldered half-pipes, or thermal panel.
The application of thermo panel offers advantages, both in manufacturing as well as in costs. Temperature gradients over the heating surface area are minimized, and the weight of the apparatus is reduced.
During the manufacturing of thermal panels, two sheets of different thickness are welded together by laser dot welding. After rounding of the resulting sheet package and welding it to a cylinder, a pressurized liquid (>> 100 bar) is pressed into the interspace between both sheets. Thus the thinner (outer) sheet is swelled in the form of cushions. The steam is flowing through these cushion-shape bucklings.
UIC GmbH has already supplied several Short Path Distillators with such thermal panel heating zones. The above mentioned advantages have been proved during the long years' operation of these plants.
The illustration shows two Short Path Distillators which have been manufactured recently, and which are subject to a leak test before being dispatched. Both plants - a KD 3600 with an evaporation surface area of 36 m² and a KD 600 with an evaporation surface area of 6 m² - are equipped with thermal panel heating zones.
Both Short Path Distillators will be used by a customer in Europe for the distillation of an alternative fuel for Diesel motors.
