The most frequent applications of Short Path Distillators and Thin Film Distillators of UIC GmbH can be divided in three categories:

-
 Separation (stripping) of a light volatile fraction in order to reduce its content in the valuable product
-
 distilling off of a valuable product from a heavy volatile residue
-
 fractionation of a multi-substance mixture

In the following text the illustration of mixtures of substances is done as a bar and the individual components are shown in different colours. The sequence of the components follows the volatility of the individual components: from light volatiles (left) to heavy volatiles (right).

 


Separation (stripping) of a light volatile fraction in order to reduce its content in the valuable product

Depending on the kind of light volatile components, different appartuses are applied. The following table shows some examples:

Distilling off of a valuable product from a heavy volatile residue

Depending on the desired operation pressure and the admissible evaporation temperature - either Thin Film Evaporators or Short Path Distillators are applied.

The general rule says that a valuable product is preferably be separated with a Short Path Distillator if
-
 its molecular weight is > 200 g / mol or
-
 its boiling temperature is >200 °C at a pressure of 1 mbar.

 

Fractionation of a multi-substance mixture by means of a Short Path Distillator

Examples:
   
- separation of mono-, di-, tri- and oligomeres, e.g. purification of dimer fatty acids
- mixtures with a great number of components having different chain lengths, e.g. paraffin waxes
